Project update January 2021

Brisbane's biggest projects rolled on throughout the second half of 2020, helping the economy when it needed it most - here's a progress snapshot.

  • Cross River Rail

    Cross River Rail

    • Status: On track
    • Due: 2024
    • With major construction under way at all of the main station sites including the mammoth demolition of the Transit Centre, the project injected about $4.1 million into the economy every day.
  • Queen's Wharf

    Queen's Wharf

    • Status: On track
    • Due: 2024
    • The integrated resort climbed upwards at the back end of 2020 with the five-level basement structure completed, the podium level, The Star Grand Hotel entrance and the Riverline Terrace taking shape.
  • Cruise Ship Terminal

    Cruise Ship Terminal

    • Status: Complete
    • Due: late-2020
    • Having supported 245 jobs on average each year during construction, the $177m mega-liner terminal was finished, on schedule, in October but is sitting idle as the Coronavirus pandemic shuts down the cruise industry.
  • Brisbane Metro

    Brisbane Metro

    • Status: On track
    • Due: 2023
    • Site investigation works continue along the 21km route of the Metro project which will include 18 stations and 11 interchanges, with services on track to start running by the end of 2023.
  • Waterfront Brisbane

    Waterfront Brisbane

    • Status: Approved
    • Due: 2026 (first tower)
    • Dexus's $2.1b makeover of the CBD riverfront gets the nod from Brisbane City Council. Stunning new artist impressions reveal a new 280m river walk, eateries and bars , 9000sqm of public realm below two windowed skyscrapers.
  • Herston Quarter

    Herston Quarter

    • Status: On track
    • Due: 2025 (Final stage)
    • The first building in the mixed use development - the STARS (surgical treatment and rehabilitation service) complex - is completed in November, while work begins on the heritage precinct.
  • West Village

    West Village

    • Status: On track
    • Due: 2023 (Final stage)
    • The iconic Peters Ice Cream factory site was a hive of activity as the $1.1b development reached the halfway milestone, with Metro Arts opening, DA for the six-storey Greenhouse office building while the $170m Peters Lane retail precinct is on track to open in May.
  • QPAC


    • Status: On track
    • Due: 2022
    • Major works began on the Playhouse Green site, including piling works, to support the construction of the foundations of the new 1500-capacity theatre.
  • Ballet Centre

    Ballet Centre

    • Status: On track
    • Due: 2021
    • The $55m refurbishment of the Thomas Dixon Centre continues on schedule, opening its doors in time for Queensland Ballet to mark its 60th anniversary this year.
